How do I keep the birds from eating my mortar?

Birds may be attracted to the mortar used between bricks because of the calcium content. There are a couple of techniques people use like lying fake snakes around or installing an artificial owl near the area. A less obtrusive approach is to place small containers of sand or ground eggshells in your yard to provide the birds with a better source of calcium than the mortar.
