You can thank Joseph Aspdin for coming up with the idea in 1824. By firing ground up clay and limestone, he created a material he called “Portland Cement.” About 20 years later, Isaac Johnson found that by firing chalk and clay at much higher temperatures, the result was a much stronger material. Johnson’s improved cement is more like our modern-day “Portland Cement.”
