One natural product we carry and recommend for your lawn and garden is mycorrhizae.
What are mycorrhizae?
Mycorrhizae are healthy fungi that create a symbiotic relationship with the roots of plants so that each thrives and grows together. These types of symbiotic relationships are common in the botanical world. About 85% of plant root structures enjoy a mutually-beneficial relationship with healthy fungi. The fungi feed on excess carbohydrates from the plant to create carbon and, in turn, give excess nutrients it absorbs from the soil back to the host plant. Mycorrhizal fungi represent the fungal filaments network that permeates the ground from their home on the plant root. Interestingly, this organism helped plants adapt from marine to land botanicals throughout millions of years.
How do mycorrhizae help my plants?
Mycorrhizae are essential for strong root development. The root system of plants includes a web of healthy fungi feeding the roots with nutrients from the soil. The structures are microscopic. In a teaspoon of soil, there may be a mile or more of these fungi. Mycorrhizae fungi specifically produce enzymes that digest and absorb food from the surrounding soil, making nutrients far more abundant for the root structure.
Mycorrhizae fungi are essential for plants to access phosphorus, nitrogen, zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, sulfur, and other vital nutrients. In fact, mycorrhizae fungi will also help your plants absorb any fertilizers you give them more efficiently. You’ll end up with more lush, healthy, green plants by adding mycorrhizae to the soil.
Another benefit of mycorrhizae fungi is that they can access water that the plant’s roots cannot. These organisms bring water back to the roots to help plants survive in drought conditions.
How do I apply mycorrhizae?
There are several forms of mycorrhizae available. Some are water soluble, and others come in the form of granules. Mycorrhizae should be applied repeatedly, and over time it will colonize throughout the roots of plant material. Don’t worry; you can’t apply too many mycorrhizae to the soil. This is a very easy additive to manage.
